What to watch: David Ogilvy, The First Mad Man

The stereotypes about the world of advertising are numerous and almost entirely uncomplimentary. According to the general public, advertising is a profession characterised by long, boozy lunches, immorality and chauvinism - an opinion only supported by popular drama Mad Men, which SBS will be screening in the coming weeks. In preparation for the debut of this series, this documentary takes audiences back to where the stereotypes began, among the glittering high rises of post-war Madison Avenue.

David Ogilvy, was known as the original king of the ad game. He went on to try his hand at a string of occupations only to land in the arena of advertising, he became a legendary "ad man" and apparently a quote machine.

Though now deceased, this documentary will give you a brief in-sight of Ogilvy with interview snippets, where he spouts the kind of cliched advertising instructions usually found in university textbooks - usually because he wrote them. Though probably not the sort of man you'd aspire to be—a profoundly successful businessman, but failed family man and confirmed eccentric—David Ogilvy is certainly an interesting figure, earning his billing as the original "Mad Man".

Jacques graciously gave AdSchool some of his time this week, guest lecturing to the students of Strategic Planning Principles. This is the story behind him....

Born in a small town in the Eastern Cape, South Africa, Jacques grew up living in just about every province of South Africa, as well as Namibia, thanks to a father with a spirit for adventure and interesting engineering projects. He matriculated from Paul Roos High in Stellenbosch and in spite of aspirations to become a plastic surgeon (he says if only Nip/Tuck was on the telly back then, it might have swung him into this much more lucrative profession), he changed direction and studied BComm (Law) at the University of Stellenbosch, completing the degree with Marketing as one of his majors...

Alex had Creative Process last night - you're always set for a suprise with Alex - he incorporates alot into his presentations; powerpoints, dvd's, music - its a world of creativity in there!
Account Management with Mark Green from Three Drunk Monkeys is on tonight at UTS- believe the topic is "Inspiring Great Creative Work", should be a good one.
